selling a domain

Always remember, a domain is worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it

Factors affecting value:

  • Usefullness to buyer
  • Search engine performance
  • Relevant traffic levels
  • Sales history for e-commerce site
  • .com domains are more valuable than local ones such as .co.uk
  • High-interest, niche subjects, trending topics or valuable keywords are worth more
  • Shorter domains are usually worth more
  • Memorable domains are worth more

Get a VERY rough estimate of value:

If you get a valuation treat it with enormous scepticism!!

According to one site, Cravenplan.com is worth over $2,000 (I don't think so).

There is a list of the top 100 domain sales at https://namebio.com/top-100-domain-name-sales-all-time (just for fun).

Another place to look is E-Bay - check for "Sold" domains only https://www.ebay.co.uk/b/bn_2316503?LH_Sold=1&_sop=16&mag=1&rt=nc

How to sell:

  • Call likely buyers - don't email as they will assume it is Spam
  • List it on E-Bay
  • Point your domain to a "For Sale" page so anyone who types your URL into a browser knows it can be bought and how to contact you.
  • Always complete the financial transaction through a trusted third-party escrow service (built into major marketplaces or via Escrow.com) to ensure you get paid before releasing the domain.
  • Try a search in Google for the keywords and pick a company on page two or at the bottom of page one that might be interested. Companies already at the top will need your domain less. But don't make any promises about moving up Google. The new owner will probably need to build a new Web site or change their existing domain to benefit.
